1) What Is UI?
User Interface is defined as the point between human and computer interaction in a device. This can include anything from a phone screen to a desktop to a mouse and keyboard. User Interface is also seen as the way in which a user interacts with an app or website – this is the UI that is most relevant to those of us in the Digital Marketing space.
2) What Is UX?
Now, User Experience is defined as the manner in which people interact with a product, and in our case a digital product. UX can also be broken down into a checklist – the questions are based around the individual’s user experience and how it benefits them. The first question is based around value; does this digital product give the user value? The second question is about function, does this digital product work efficiently? The third revolves around usability, is this product easy to use and navigate? And finally, the general impression, is this a product that users enjoy using/engaging with?
3) How Does UI and UX Impact Engagement?
As the world becomes more and more digital, efficiency and ease become priority more and more – this applies to tactical things like shopping or cooking to navigating a website or app. In both of these cases you don’t want to rummage through 6 drawers for one spice mix or click through 6 tabs to find the information or product you’re looking for. People engage with digital products that make their life easier and that is why it’s important to consider User Interface and Experience when designing your website or app. When your website or app functions efficiently, is pleasurable to use and aesthetically pleasing we see higher click through rates and engagement – in fact, according to Eventige each $1 invested in UX Design brings in almost $100 in return.
4) What Role Does UI and UX Play In Website Design?
Good implementation of UI and UX will remove barriers and create the shortest path for conversions, this ideally looks like limiting your sales funnel to 3 pages and keeping your visitor focused on that Check Out/Purchase button by limiting pop ups, redirective links and sidebars full of ads. Your page should be clear and concise and take no more than 2 seconds to load – this may mean getting rid of extra ‘meat’ on your page but that only results in more engaged and happy users. There are a lot of websites and apps that try to cram as much information on one page as possible, this makes it difficult for users to find what they’re looking for and this is why it’s important to utilize that white space for your user’s eyes to easily catch what they’re looking for. Paying attention to each element of a page is key, this covers your headlines and subheadlines to your CTA buttons to navigation tabs and finally the colors of each page. Your headlines and subheadlines should always be in a bold and easy to read font with your CTA buttons in a bright and contrasting color to catch your reader’s eye while your navigation tabs should be viewable on every page on any screen. Keeping each page clean and limited to 3 colors is key to a page that doesn’t feel overwhelming or annoying to look at. These are some of the basic elements and rules of UI and UX in Website Design but they will carry you a long way if you stick to it.
